The UK’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework is transforming the way packaging is designed and recycled. At its core is the Recyclability Assessment Methodology (RAM), which classifies packaging recyclability using a Red/Amber/Green (RAG) system. This helps manufacturers, brands, and recyclers clearly understand which packaging is easiest to recycle and meets environmental standards.

Red/Amber/Green (RAG) system

What Does “Green” Status Mean?

Achieving a “Green” rating under RAM indicates that packaging is highly recyclable and aligned with UK EPR requirements. To qualify, packaging typically needs to meet several key criteria:

  • 100% mono-material PP (both pot, lid and label)
  • Natural, clear, or white pot or lid for easier sorting
  • Minimum 40 mm in two dimensions to ensure effective automated sorting
  • Inks ideally below 1% of total weight, so they don’t impede recycling
  • PP pots widely collected across the UK – over 75% of local authorities

Packaging Mode and EPR RAM Green

Packaging Mode offers in-mould labelled (IML) pots and lids made entirely from a single PP polymer. When designed to meet the specified criteria above, these pots can be reported as EPR RAM Green.

The mono-material design of a well-crafted IML PP pot makes it highly compatible with existing UK recycling streams, qualifying it for a favourable ‘Green’ rating and reduced EPR fees.

This ensures that brands using Packaging Mode solutions are able to align their packaging with UK recyclability requirements while maintaining high quality and shelf impact.

Why It Matters

With increasing regulatory focus on packaging recyclability, understanding the RAM methodology and aiming for “Green” status is no longer optional – it’s a key part of responsible product design. Packaging Mode’s solutions help brands meet these standards without compromising on quality, durability, or shelf appeal.
